Rugeley hit the first two scrums strongly and when Wolverhampton were awarded a not straight line out elected to thrown in. Rugelkey won quick line out ball with Jake combining with Steven Kelly to put Josh Heathrington into space. Heathrington powered his way through several tackles to score in the corner. Kirk Jones stood up to take a tricky conversion which was slotted over to enable Rugeley to take a 7-0 lead.
Rugeley were full of confidence with de Ridder taking one of his trademark quick tap penalties. He found him self in acres of space and stopped dead in his tracks as if confused with all the possibilities. Thanfully Rugeley won the ruck ball but Graham was taken down by a crushing tackle inches from the line.
Wolverhampton then began to fight back. Their lineout dominance began to moveinto the scrum. Rugeley were being pushed back on almost every occassion. A Rugeley lilne out was won by Wolves who set up a rolling maul which wheeled its way down toward the try line. Rugeley stopped it short but a few phases of quickly recycled ball saw them have a 3 man overlap and score a try which was converted to leave the score 7-7 at half time.
The second half started much the same as the first. Wolverhampton got the better of the set piece and Rugeley dominatiing the loose. Rugeley did benefit from the introduction of the Artful Dodger himself Matthew "Hercules" Rodger who blunted the rolling maul by pinching Wolverhampton's ball.
The turning point came with a tough tackle by Kelly on the big number eight saw him leave the field with an injury. This seemed to offer Rugeley respite in the scrum and Kirk Jones, Stuart Whittal and John Cliffe began to get the better of their opposite numbers.
Jim Gawletta, making his debut got the ball in space and powered through the middle of the pitch to set up and atacking opportunity. Rugeley recycled the ball and won a penalty in front of the posts. Despite his earlier accuracy Kirk Jones managed to miss what appeared to be an unmissbale kick.
Rugeley feared this was going to be a match of missed opportunities as Simon Beeny missed the first of three passes. The veteran, large nosed Winger seemed surprised that he couldn't catch the ball when his fist was clenched in Superman flying position. Rugeley will be hoping he has a wedding to go to again next week. The match was won by Rugeley on the 60 minute mark. Rugeley camped on the Wolves 5 metre line following good work from captain Barry Newton. Scrum half Graham looked up to see Daniel Howe in space and dive to score his 4th try of the season.
Rugeley followed it up 5 minutes later with a sweeping move across the pitch which saw Howe pass to Newton who passed it back to Howe who had looped round. Howe off loaded to Graham who saw Kelly powering up the wing to score in the corner.
Kirk Jones kicked another difficult penalty chance to seal the victory.
