Niall Evans had refereed Willenhall 2nds the previous Saturday and reported back that they looked stong particularly up front as they defeated Stourbridge.
It was anticipated that this would be Rugeley's stiffest challenge yet and so it proved.
Willenhall has a bright start and were unlucky not to score as they monopolised possesion in Rugeley's half. Somewhat against the run of play when an inch perfect kick was scooped up by Goggles Wilkes who ran
it in from his own half.
Willenhall responded well and were achieving complete domiance of the scrum. They evened up the scores with a well worked line out and drive.
At half time teh teams were locked at 7-7.
This time it was Rugeley who started the stronger this time with Joe Payne running in a try following a turnover.
The see-saw swung back in Willenhall's direction when anotehr period of rucks and mauls led to their second try which they were unable to convert. Two penalties saw Willenhall edge ahead an dit looked like they may have done enough to snatch victory.
However, Rugeley had shown all game that they had the pace and skill to create chances and with just 10 minutes to go the ball was delivered into the hands of Matt Joss who forced his way over to score.
In the last minute of the game the newly substituted Rugeley 8 came on to seal the victory.
It was a tough game and whilst the 31-18 victory probably flattered Rugeley it was nice to see that Rugeley's pace and fitness was rewarded with a win.
The serious business starts on Saturday with an away game against Essington in the League. Players are asked to meet at 12.45. Rugeley 2s are at home against Essington in the merit league.
