Rugeley Rugby Club travelled across the chase to be part of the opening day of Cannock’s new club house and ended the day with a win.

With a later than planned kick off due to the late arrival of the match official the game started with an end to end well-paced game that either team could not break.
With Cannock pushing hard at Rugeley but the visiting teams defence was impregnable.
Then with good support from the Rugeley pack Matt Williscroft was able to break free in the 25th minute to score a try right under the noses of the home back line.
Cannock not please at what had just occurred came right back at the visitors and looked as they were about to score from the restart, but Rugeley’s defence line was not at any point going to allow Cannock to break through, the much to the annoyance of the home side.
With scrum after scrum right on the Rugeley try line Cannock were unable to make the try they so desperately wanted, then with the great team play by Wilkes & Hastings Rugeley were able to break the deadlock and clear the ball right into the open space of Cannock 22mtr area.
The home side were able to regroup and put together a run of set play that brought them back to the Rugeley 10 mtrs line but were still unable to break the Rugeley defence line, with Cannock dogged determination were able to sneak a penalty, they opted to kick for the post resulting in 3 points on the score sheet for the home side. 3 – 5 with only 5 minutes left of the first period left to play.
With another try by Williscroft and the conversion from Matty Keys the first period ended with Rugeley leading the field. 3 – 12 to Rugeley at the break.
The second period started with team changes on both side, but only one side had come back on the field with the fight and fire in their stomachs to wreak havoc on an unsuspecting home side.
When after the first 5 minutes Veteran player Carl Johnson was able to make a 3 mtrs run and clear the ball to Wilkes who in turn was able to make gains on the home side and clear to David Bagnall who was able to score, with conversion Rugeley extend their lead to 3 – 19.
With Cannock now starting to show cracks in their discipline and ability Rugeley start to tame the lion on the field with a great run by Mitchell Everall and spot on support play Eddie Rodgers Everall was able to extend Rugeley’s lead to 24points bringing the ever increasing score line to 3 – 24 to Rugeley.
At this point the home side seem to completely lose their composure and the game seemed to lose its structure and control, with intervention from the match official things seemed to calm down and return to a fairly disciplined game of rugby.
With Rugeley now in complete control of the game up pops Williscroft scoring his third try of the day and with the conversion pushing the score to 3 – 31 to the visitors.
With the home side still trying hard to take control they continue valiantly to push forwards but to no avail.
With only 10 minutes to play Luke Pagett was able to break free and score for Rugeley bringing the score to an ever increasing 3 – 38 to the visitors.
With only minutes left to play on came super sub De Ridder who from the onset was an influential team player and was able to gain pace on the opposition set the ball and create a great opening for young Liam Morrison to score, with the conversion Rugeley end the game victorious winners.
Result was Cannock 3 Rugeley 45
